Evidence from the Quran and Sunnah prohibiting wearing amulets

Allah says,”And most of them believe not in Allah without associating (others as partners) with Him” Surah Yusuf (12:106)

It was narrated from Zaynab (ra) the wife of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (ra) from ‘Abd-Allaah (ra) that he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam say,‘Spells (Non-Quranic Ruqyah), Amulets(Taweez) and love-charms are shirk.

(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3883; Ibn Maajah, 3530)

It was narrated from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir al-Juhani (ra) that a group came to the Messenger of Allaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam  [to swear their allegiance (bay’ah) to him]. He accepted the bay’ah of nine of them but not of one of them. They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, you accepted the bay’ah of nine but not of this one.” He said, “He is wearing an amulet.” The man put his hand (in his shirt) and took it off, then he (the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam accepted his bay’ah. He said, ‘Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk.” (Narrated by Musnad-Ahmad, 16969)

Abdullah bin Masood (ra) reports that I have heard the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam saying that blowing (Non-Quranic), Tamiza (Taweez,Talismans), threads and potions are all shirk. (Mishkaat Sharif, pg 389)

Uqbah ibn Amir (ra) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam say, “Whoever hangs an amulet around his neck, then Allah will not fulfill his wishes; and whoever hangs a seashell as a charm, then Allah will not leave him without penalty. ” [Musnad Ahmad, Number 16951, Sahih,]. This hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Arna’oot in his commentary on al-Musnad. Seashells were worn to ward off the evil eye.

Uqba bin Amir Al Jehni (ra) relates that a group of people came to the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam to make a religious pledge (Bait). The Holy Prophet accepted the pledge from nine of the groups and left one out. The companions asked the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam as to why he did not accept the pledge of the one who was left out.The reply was: “I did not make Bait with him because he was wearing a Talisman.” On hearing this that person drew the Talisman, out and destroyed it. Thereafter, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam accepted his pledge (bait) and said whoever wears a talisman,he associates partners with Allah (i.e. he practices Shirk). [Musnad Ahmed, Vol. 4 Pg. 156]

Imran ibn Hussein (ra) reported: The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, saw a man wearing a brass ring, so he asked, “What is this?” He said, “It is protection from my arthritis.” So the Prophet said, “Remove it, for indeed it will only increase your arthritis, and if you were to die wearing it you would never be successful.” [Musnad Ahmad, Number 19498, Sahih]

It was narrated from Zaynab (ra) the wife of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood (ra) from ‘Abd-Allaah (ra) that he said:  “I heard the Messenger of Allaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam say, ‘Spells (ruqyah), amulets(Taweez) and love-charms are shirk.” I said, “Why do you say this? By Allaah, my eye was weeping with a discharge and I kept going to So and so, the Jew, who did a spell for me. When he did the spell, it calmed down.” ‘Abd-Allaah (ra) said: “That was just the work of the Shaytaan who was picking it with his hand, and when (the Jew) uttered the spell, he stopped. All you needed to do was to say as the Messenger of Allaah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam used to say: ‘Adhhib il-ba’s Rabb al-naas ishfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqaman (Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal, You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing which leaves no disease behind.’

(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3883; Ibn Maajah, 3530)

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has said , whoever hangs anything he will be entrusted to that thing only. (Abu Dawood, Mishkat pg. 389; Tirmizi Vol. 2, pg. 28)

Al-Khattaabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Amulets were things that they used to wear in the belief that they could ward off calamity. Al-Baghawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The Arabs used to put amulets on their children to protect them against the evil eye,or so they claimed. This was declared invalid by

What is Waswas?

The term waswas in Islam literally means “sounds like whisper , rustle” and it is used in regards to the whisper of the Shaytaan. Waswas specifically relates to delusion , suspicion , misgivings , baseless possibilities etc. Waswas can occur in terms of worship , aqeedah and even aspects of every day life  The types of waswas and it’s effects  The Shayateen try to tempt Muslims to sin and weaken their faith in Islam through doubt and negative thoughts. We refer to these thoughts as Waswas and the Arabic word وسوس appears a few times throughout the Quran . Destroying taweez (amulets)

When it comes to destroying taweez, there are a number of things to bear in mind.  EQUIPMENT  You will need the following equipment: 1.  A tray - This will ensure that everything stays together and nothing falls on the floor. 2.  A long neck gas lighter – the kind often used for lighting barbecues. 3. A suitable container for burning the ta’weez in. I personally use a stainless steel metal cylinder, but you can use an old pan, or anything that can take the heat. 4. Gloves If the taweez is encased in a container, you will also need: 1.  A pair of pliers and scissors, and possibly other tools to open the case. 2.  Eye protection is recommended. PLEASE NOTE : If the taweez contains knots, you will also need a loose razor blade. If the method calls for ruqyah water, you will also need a bowl of tap water. *Before beginning , we recommend that during the whole process, from beginning to end, the person continually recites al-Falaq and an-Naas.* How to open...

How to recognise a magician (sahir)

1. He asks patient’s his Mother’s name. 2. He takes a sweaty garment from the patient (a piece of cloth, hat, etc) 3. He sometimes asks for an animal, with certain specifications, in order to slaughter it without saying the name of Allah. 4. He may use the sacrificial blood to stain some painful areas of the patient, or throw the carcass in ruined site. 5. He writes incantations.
